This course is designed to discuss the use, care, maintenance, and inspection of various below-the-hook lifting devices, including alloy-chain slings, wire-rope slings, nylon slings, shackles, eyebolts, hooks and plate grabs. The course encompasses both formal lecture and hands-on exercises to assist the students in the proper selection and use of lifting devices, as well as the various types of hitches and configurations. Students will be given practical examples to demonstrate their application of the information learned.

  • Determining rigging task for the loads to be hoisted
  • Know and understand the requirements to the load weight and the center of gravity.
  • Know and identify various rigging hardware
  • Know and identify various below the hook lifting devises.
  • Know and identify various sling hitches and how to apply them for various load configurations
  • How to read a rigging chart for various hitches
  • Basic Understanding of Crane Operations
  • Use of Rigging Equipment
  • Basic Understanding of Crane Operations
  • Limitations and Capacities
  • Site Considerations
  • Safety Issues
  • Calculating sling angles (Basic no math)
  • D/d ratio (Properly fit the hardware)
  • Wire rope, nylon slings, endless slings, and alloy chain inspection
  • Rigging gear & Hardware inspection
  • Proper crane hand and Verbal signals
  • Load control (Reference to traveling through lift route)
  • Know and understand the dangers of working around power lines, and the course of action if power lines contact is made.
  • Knots and tag line use
  • Load support (Cribbing, blocking ,jacks, etc.)
  • Know and understand the regulatory requirements of 1926, Subpart CC as it pertains to rigging.
  • Role of basic qualified rigger, advance qualified rigger and competent person
  • Certification of completion
